Penang overview

Penang, often known as the Pearl of the Orient, is the most well known beach destination in Malaysia and is home to lovely beaches, lively nightlife, and an interesting colonial past. Penang was established, in 1786, as the first British trading post in the Far East and its capital, Georgetown, has a rich colonial heritage. Penang's best known beach resort is Batu Ferringhi, the home of many stylish beach front resort hotels. Penang also has a multi cultural heritage with sights such as the Snake Temple and the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, Kek Lok Si. Away from the built up areas, the interior of Penang still has dense tropical rain forest, paddy fields and unspoiled villages.
